You connect Moblin with a QR code. Open the “Eingänge” (inputs) tab in your studio, click “Quelle verbinden” (connect source) at the input you want, choose “Moblin” and scan the code with the iPhone. From it Moblin creates a stream that sends to this input and can remote-control your studio at the same time.

Step by step

  1. Start your studio once. An input's address comes into being with the first start. Before that there is no QR code.
  2. Install Moblin from the App Store.
  3. Open the “Eingänge” tab and click “Quelle verbinden” at the input the phone is to feed. Choose the “Moblin” tab in the dialog.
  4. Scan the QR code with the iPhone's camera app. If you have the page open on the phone itself, tap “In Moblin öffnen” (open in Moblin) instead.
  5. Confirm the import in Moblin. The app creates a stream with the name of your studio.
  6. Start the stream in Moblin. On the “Eingänge” tab the input jumps to “Verbunden” (connected), and the picture appears on the desk.

Moblin refuses the import while the app is sending or recording. End the stream in Moblin and scan once more.

What the code sets up

Part What Moblin does with it
The input's address Sends picture and sound over SRT to exactly this input.
Remote control Connects to your studio to change scenes. You find it in Moblin behind the quick button “OBS”.

The remote control uses the same interface as a Stream Deck or Bitfocus Companion: your studio speaks the OBS WebSocket protocol. On the road you change the scene from the phone with it, without opening the desk in the browser.

Several phones

An input accepts only one sender. Set up every phone for an input of its own: every input has its own button and its own code. You set the number of inputs on the “Eingänge” tab before you start the studio.

If a phone is only to control and not to send a picture, scan the code and do not start the stream in Moblin.

When something changes

The code contains the input's address and the password of the remote control. If you create a new password on the “Remote Control” page, the old code is no longer valid for the remote control. Scan the new one then. A running studio only takes the new password over when you end it and start it again.

Treat the code like a stream key. Whoever has it can send to your input and control your studio. Do not show it in the stream.

Setting it up by hand

It also works without the QR code:

  1. On the “Eingänge” tab, under “Quelle verbinden”, copy the input's address. It has the form srt://<host>:<port>?streamid=<id>.
  2. Create a new stream in Moblin with SRT as its destination and enter the address. There is no passphrase; the field stays empty.
  3. The connection details for the remote control are on the “Remote Control” page.

What you should check in Moblin

  • Codec H.264 or H.265 (HEVC). The studio accepts both. H.265 is worth it when the bitrate is tight. See H.264 or H.265 (in German).
  • HDR is off. The studio does not convert an HDR picture; the colors then look pale.
  • The bitrate fits your network. Guide values are in Which bitrate for IRL streams (in German).
  • The SRT latency. On mobile data more than the default is worth it, see Setting the SRT latency.
  • No SRTLA. Moblin can bundle several connections; the studio does not accept that yet. Send plain SRT over one connection.

When no picture comes

What you see What you do
The button with the QR symbol is missing Start your studio once; the address comes into being with the first start.
Moblin refuses the import End stream and recording in Moblin and scan once more.
The input stays on “Kein Signal” (no signal) Check whether Moblin has the right stream selected and is sending. Go on with No picture in the studio.
It does not work on Wi-Fi but does on mobile data The network blocks UDP. See SRT on hotel or company Wi-Fi.
